Now Hiring: Advanced Cook / Baker

Elkstone Farm is a permaculture-inspired farm in the mountains of northwest Colorado near Steamboat Springs.  Its owners were inspired to start the farm by the agricultural heritage of the valley and the desire to improve the health of the land.  The farm embraces organic principles to maximize productivity and emphasize the health of its farmers and its crops.  Throughout the year we host culinary and educational events which are open to the community.  We also teach cooking lessons and create a line of value-added products from the farm’s produce. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY: It is the responsibility of the advanced cook to work alongside the Chef while cooking and baking in support of the farm’s culinary endeavors.  This includes our line of value-added products such as cookies, crackers, jams, and pickles, as well as our on-farm lunches, dinners, and cooking classes.  This position is an opportunity to work with the freshest organic produce and regionally sourced products of the highest quality, in a harmonious and peaceful environment. 

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Advanced Cook will be responsible for following established recipes to help create the farm’s line of value-added products alongside the Chef.  The Advanced Cook will support the chef in preparing meals to be served on the farm, including casual lunches and formal multi-course dinners.  The Advanced Cook will cook and serve informal meals on their own when ready to do so.

 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Advanced Cook will have the opportunity to contribute creatively to the development of menus and new products.  The Advanced Cook will help with general farm activities as needed, particularly in the early and late seasons. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   The Advanced Cook will have at least 2 years of culinary experience in either savory cooking or pastry/baking.  A culinary degree can be substituted for one year of experience.  The Advanced Cook will be familiar with kitchen operations, food safety and sanitation, basic culinary terminology, and the principles of cooking and baking.  The Advanced Cook will have a basic knowledge of knife skills.  PREFERRED: ServSafe certification.  Familiarity with multi-course fine dining.  One year of pastry experience. 

 

PERSONAL TRAITS: This is a nonsmoking position on a tobacco-free farm.  This position will involve working both indoors and outdoors, so being comfortable in various weather conditions is important.  Self-direction and ownership of work product are crucial.  Some repetitive tasks are part of this position. Willingness to learn is essential to this position.

 

REPORTS TO: Executive Chef.

CONSULTS AND WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Farm managers, head grower.
