Pool and riffle restoration is a powerful way for individuals to stabilize the climate\, and revitalize local ecosystems. \nWhy Pool and Riffle Restoration Matters \nWater is the foundation of all life\, and by restoring these natural water systems\, we can ensure that our ecosystems can regain and remain the vibrant and life-sustaining keystones to abundance for all. \nHealthy Streams naturally form sequences of pools (deep\, slow-moving water) and riffles (shallow\, fast-moving water). Unfortunately\, it is hard to find undisturbed and truly healthy formations that are crucial for healthy aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. By restoring pools and riffles\, we can  recharge ground water and turn ephemeral flows into forgotten babbling streams and brooks.  We can bring  life back to areas that only see water seasonally and by improving water retention we can reduce floods and droughts\, creating a more stable thermal environment for aquatic and terrestrial life.  \nThrough sediment and soil capture\, the subsequent abundance that sprouts from hydrated soils stores far more elemental and living carbon\, helping to mitigating climate change. \nRevive Seasonal Streams\, improve water quality\, increase biodiversity and Abundance\, and Capture Carbon \nYou Can Lead the Flow! \nYou can make a difference with simple\, impactful actions: \nLearn with Us at Elkstone Farm: Join us at Elkstone Farm to learn hands-on techniques for pool and riffle restoration. Empower yourself with the knowledge and skills to take effective action in your community. \nLearn and Share\, Get Involved Locally\, Volunteer\, Advocate\, and Adopt a watershed!  \nBy getting involved\, you’re contributing to a global effort to combat climate change and protect life. Each restored pool sends ripples of palpable positive change\, proving that individual actions can make a significant difference. \nJoin us for an immersive three-day course that will revolutionize your approach to watershed restoration! Our focus is on restoring the upper ephemeral flow\, pool and riffle systems\, using hands-on techniques that will have you feeling like a restoration expert in no time.    \nOur course will give you practical\, hands-on activities that will teach you the skills you need to make a real difference in the health of our waterways. You'll learn how read water courses and implement restoration projects that restore natural flow patterns and promote the growth of healthy aquatic ecosystems. \nWe will guide you through every step of the process\, from site assessment and planning to planting and monitoring. You'll learn about the latest techniques and technologies for restoring stream channels\, creating aquatic habitat\, and stabilizing banks and slopes. \nBut this is no ordinary course!  We believe that restoration should be fun\, engaging\, and exciting\, and our program reflects that. You'll get to work in the field with other restoration enthusiasts\, enjoying the beauty of nature on Elkstone farm and learn practical skills that will last a lifetime. \nJoin us for an unforgettable three-day journey into the heart of watershed restoration. You'll come away feeling inspired\, empowered\, nourished \, and equipped to make a real difference in the health of our rivers and streams. Sign up today and be a part of the restoration revolution! \n  \n \nAbout Ben: \nBen Murray is passionately committed to guiding radical restoration of our parched lands.  Through restoring damaged and degraded natural systems from the top down and the seed up so that we may live in a truly  resilient vibrant and nourishing world.  He feels that right relationship to healthy ecosystems is the foundation of physical mental and spiritual wellbeing.  \nHis path to watershed restoration started at a very earl age playing with streams in the forests of England awakening a profound relationship to water\, later coming upon the work of Victor Schauberger setting him on a deeper path of understanding the circulatory system of our earth the streams and rivers. He has done watershed restoration in Brazil\, Ecuador\, Canada and the USA.   He had the privilege to do a seed to seed apprenticeship in the permaculture market gardens of the oldest agroforestry operation in North America\, Windhorse Farm.   At 175 years of continual management\, Windhorse Farm has more standing timber than the day they started.   The deep feeling of old growth forest coexists while being actively managed as a woodlot.  This gave him the visceral knowing that another way is possible. It was on Windhorse  that he first actively started restoring waterways and a deep love of water turned into the seeds of a new skill. He was lit up by this work more than anything in how humbling and awe inspiring  it is to to participate with nature in such a way that streams that were once dr\, return to flowing and all the subsequent life that burgeons forth from such simple actions. It has showed him that water is the fulcrum point of all ecological design and restoration\, and our deepest teacher about life.   \nOver the years\, his hands-on experience of success and failure and happy accidents in restoration have illuminated a simple yet profound path to watershed restoration.  He has taught and been taught by the rural people in Ecuador  and trained Peace Corps volunteers where he co-owns a regenerative cacao farm.  In Brazil\, he built a permaculture center around empowering locals to thrive in community cooperation\, championing their local skills\, ancestral natural building skills and helping them to restore their ancestral water courses and lands. He has consulted and worked in Mexico and the Caribbean on regenerative farm design.  He currently resides in rural Boulder\, Colorado\, where he lives with his wife and 6 year old twins\, developing a a homestead at the foot of the mountains.

SUMMARY:Solstice Tea and Zen retreat: June 21-23\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:To fill our souls with a powerful Tea and listen to the aspen leaves flittering in the breeze. To feel that breeze softly flow around us and through us. To feel the mind expanding beyond our body\, into the trees\, and then beyond them… \nTo take this expansive stillness and hold it with the no-mind of Zazen such that it fuses\, at least for a time\, with our very being.  \nTo purify\, settle\, and see. \nThe sages have always known that nothing elevates a Tea session more than a transcendental natural setting. Through Tea we touch Nature. In the tranquility cultivated through harmony\, reverence\, and purity we find the divine. This the the Way of Tea. \nWhether you wish to begin a tea practice or deepen the one you have\, this weekend will be an exquisite and profound journey.  \n \nThis retreat brings two perennial traditions together to deepen one's practice\, whether a novice or someone who has long trod the path. There is a saying from our tea teacher\, “Zen and Tea are one flavor”. The mindfulness and insight of zen practice both inform and clarify our pouring of tea.  The combination of tea ceremony and zen in a beautiful natural setting is powerful medicine. \nWe will drink tea from our personal collections and teach about the provenance of living teas. \nWe are grateful to be hosting one of my favorite chajin to pour tea with us as a community.  This is an opportunity to join with skilled practitioners who are humbly learning and sharing their passion for the Way of Tea. Together\, we will drink tea with a beginner’s mind and receive with humility and grace the wisdom of the leaf. There is a legend of the Emperor Shen Nong\, who while sitting in nature had the leaves of a tea plant fall into a bowl of hot water. In many ways\, we still quietly follow in his footsteps. \n*Price includes farm-to-table\, gourmet meals cooked by an on-site chef\, and on-site camping with access to flush toilets and a shower.  Fruit and baked goods are provided in the morning. \n  \nFriday 5-8 pm\, Saturday 9-8 pm\, Sunday 9-7 pm. \n \nFriday   \n5-6:15 - Tea Ceremony: Bowl tea \n6:30-7:30 pm Dinner at Elkstone Farm \n7:30- 8:00 pm Evening Zazen  \n8:00 Close for the night \nSaturday \n9:00-9:40- Zazen  \n9:45-10:15- Physical/embodiment exercise \n10:15-1200 Tea Ceremony: Sidehandle \n12:00-1:00- Lunch \n1:00-3:30- Zazen and Tea \n3:30-5- Extended break/wander/practice period \n5-6:30- Tea Ceremony \n6:30-7:30- Dinner \n7:30-8:00- Zazen \n  \nSunday \n9:00-9:40- Zazen  \n9:45-10:15- Physical/embodiment exercise \n10:15-1200 Tea Ceremony: Gong-fu \n12:00-1:00- Lunch \n1:00-1:30- Zazen \n1:30-3- Extended break/wander/practice period \n3-4:30- Tea Ceremony \n5:00-6:00 Dinner \n6:00-7:00- Closing circle for weekend/Bringing it home \n  \nYour facilitators: \n \n  \nStephan has walked in the Way of Tea since meeting Global Tea Hut’s Wu De in 2016. He has studied with Wu De at the Tea Sage Hut and several other locations\, including hosting Wu De in Boulder three times. He financed the construction of Boulder Tea Hut’s Sunshine Springs Teahouse and co-founded Boulder Tea Hut in 2023. He is an avid collector of antique oolongs\, ginbin\, and tetsubin. \nStephan is a father of two rambunctious little boys (who occasionally join him for tea)\, speaks Mandarin\, has lived and traveled extensively across Asia\, and by day helps develop a sizable multinational business empire.  \n  \n\nMarco Chung-Shu Lam is a curious and compassionate human being who has a passion for health\, the environment and the ability of humans to create a better world. He has practiced Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for over 25 years and is lauded to have a unique style of practice that accelerates his clients breakthroughs in both physical and cognitive arenas. Practicing internal martial arts for over 30 years has deeply informed his relationship with tea. His zen teacher\, Jun Po Roshi\, bestowed the name Yakuso to him\, which means the healing source in Japanese. Marco’s style of tea pouring centers around family and community. His main teacher of tea was his grandmother\, An Chin Lin\, who believed that serving tea was a way to share your love with other people. Marco believes the same. Along with his wife\, Jamie\, he is the steward and farm manager of Elkstone Farm.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Oyster Mushrooms at home with Micheal Butts: May 29th
DESCRIPTION:Micheal will spend a day introducing you to growing Oyster Mushrooms on a small scale with simple processes you can do at home\, and you’ll go home with your first little “garden” of mushrooms.   In the morning we will start by introducing you to the wonderful world of fungi\, discuss growing mediums well suited for Oyster varieties and the conditions that help them to thrive to abundant fruiting. We will discuss where we can find all the commonly available resources. I will have step by step instructions for you on preparing the growing medium and how to create the favorable conditions for fruiting as the mycelium grows. \nAfter a wonderful farm-to-table lunch at the farm we will spend a couple hours having fun building our own mushroom grow bags with materials I will have ready to assemble.   Folks will go home with some of their own innoculated mushroom bags. \n\n \n\n\n\n\nMicheal Butts is an urban homesteader in downtown Loveland\, Colorado packing his quarter acre estate with a flock of yard birds\, several colonies of honey bees\, garden beds\, a wood fired coffee roastery\, beer and mead brewing equipment and a firewood shed. He is the production manager for Crown Mushrooms farm in nearby Berthoud.

SUMMARY:Bee Guardianship Workshop: May 25-26th\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:We are super excited to bring back our favorite Bee Guardian\, Corwin Bell\, for another round of mind blowing class about how to care for bees.   Corwin has a unique perspective on caring for our pollinating friends that is changing the paradigm of beekeeping in radical ways that help us tune in more to the natural world!  This will be Corwin's third visit and each year we go a little deeper into the observation of our nectar loving friends! \nSession 1:\nMay 25th: 10am - 3pm\nSession 1 covers more than just the bee basics\, which is a misnomer because there is nothing basic about bees! Corwin paints a fascinating picture of how bee genetics inform survivor behavior traits\, how these traits make up the bees' behavioral immune system\, which directly relate to survivability. Corwin launches into the big picture of bees as a superorganism\, why we teach beekeeping the way we do\, and why we designed the type of hives we use. We compare and contrast different hive styles used by the majority of beekeepers\, but we also explore various management practices that natural Bee Guardians use to create a sustainable habitat for the bees. Once we learn the bee basics\, understand the individual types of bees in the colony\, and can identify and discern the various combs and their uses in the nest\, we will have the foundation to continue onto Session 2. \n  \nSession 2:\nMay 26th: 10am - 3pm\nIn Session 2 we go through step-by-step management practices during the seasons of the hive. We learn to "read" combs from different locations in the honey bee nest and assess their condition\, their state of health and many other factors. Corwin demonstrates unique techniques for hive management\, presents a "time lapse" perspective of how the honey bee nest is initially created\, how it evolves over the first year and how it is sustained over the years through careful observation and application of specific management techniques at the right times. By the end of Session 2 you should be able to identify colony problems\, apply solutions and be able to assess what to do for your bees in just about every circumstance that you will encounter. Session 2 is also when we get to see how Corwin approaches the hives and how he flows with the energy of the bees\, and how he moves through the hive\, weather permitting. \n  \nAbout the Instructors: \n \nCorwin Bell\nCorwin Bell is a longtime treatment-free Bee Guardian and founder of BackYardHive.com. In 1995\, Bell started keeping bees due to a prolonged fascination with this delicate pollinator. From the beginning\, Corwin always built his own hives. Early on\, before beekeepers recognized the massive value of survivor behaviors preserved in the genetics of wild swarms\, Bell made it his mission to field every call and save as many wild swarms as he could. He began getting an ever increasing number of phone calls alerting him of swarms that needed to be captured and given good homes. With each swarm\, Bell would take the opportunity to build and test different hive designs\, ideas\, features and alternative practices. \n  \n \nKaren Sadenwater\nKaren co-founded BackYardHive.com with Corwin in 2005 after she caught her first bee swarm and was immediately hooked on bees. She talked to a local woodworker asking to have a hive built overnight for her newly caught swarm. After much discussion with the woodworker and Corwin about hive size and details\, the first 'BackYardHive' was born. Soon after Corwin and Karen created the BackYardHive website with backyard beekeeping information\, a training DVD and fully assembled hives. Karen has worked with the bees under the guidance of Corwin for the past 10 years. Karen brings a sense of calm and respect when working with the honeybees. She co-teaches classes with Corwin and is especially skilled and patient when helping beginners get started on their new journey of Bee Guardianship.
