SUMMARY:Book Club Dinner: Auberge Of The Flowering Hearth: July 22nd\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Chef Russell has a love for this beautiful book that is a hybrid between a story and a cookbook with a deep love of life and food from a high alpine valley. \n“This cookbook is a whole way of life. What care\, love\, and work have gone into it. I find it fascinating. I think people would just love it\, as it is not like anything else around.” -Julia Child \nIn the high Alpine valley of Le Grande Chartreuse\, Roy Andreis de Groot discovered by accident a charming and unpretentious little inn L’Auberge de l’Atre Fleuri. Impressed by the devotion of its owners to perpetuating the tradition of supreme country dining\, Mr. de Groot returned to the inn to record their recipes for natural country soups\, hearty winter stews\, roasted meats\, pates\, terrines\, and fruity and spirituous desserts—the best of French cooking. \nSuperb food\, fine wine and the perfect blending of both into a series of menus for memorable lunches and dinners\, together with the unique French Alpine recipes that build each meal—these are the ingredients of this remarkable book\, now considered a classic. \nBetter yet\, Chef Russell is going to cook several recipes from this book to enrich our discussion and palates!  Our farm manager\, Marco Lam is partnering once again with Danielle Skov\, of Off the Beaten Path bookstore\,  to host a lively discussion.  Please order your book in advance and read it.   If you don't finish it\, you can can still join us for dinner without being embarrassed!

SUMMARY:Tea and Meditation Retreat: July 11-13\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:To fill our souls with a powerful Tea and listen to the aspen leaves flittering in the breeze. To feel that breeze softly flow around us and through us. To feel the mind expanding beyond our body\, into the trees\, and then beyond them… \nTo take this expansive stillness and hold it with the no-mind of Zazen such that it fuses\, at least for a time\, with our very being.  \nTo purify\, settle\, and see. \nThe sages have always known that nothing elevates a Tea session more than a transcendental natural setting. Through Tea we touch Nature. In the tranquility cultivated through harmony\, reverence\, and purity we find the divine. This the the Way of Tea. \nWhether you wish to begin a tea practice or deepen the one you have\, this weekend will be an exquisite and profound journey.  \n \nThis retreat brings two perennial traditions together to deepen one's practice\, whether a novice or someone who has long trod the path. There is a saying from our tea teacher\, “Zen and Tea are one flavor”. The mindfulness and insight of zen practice both inform and clarify our pouring of tea.  The combination of tea ceremony and zen in a beautiful natural setting is powerful medicine. \nWe will drink tea from our personal collections and teach about the provenance of living teas. \nWe are grateful to be hosting my favorite chajin to pour tea with us as a community.  This is an opportunity to join with skilled practitioners who are humbly learning and sharing their passion for the Way of Tea. Together\, we will drink tea with a beginner’s mind and receive with humility and grace the wisdom of the leaf. There is a legend of the Emperor Shen Nong\, who while sitting in nature had the leaves of a tea plant fall into a bowl of hot water. In many ways\, we still quietly follow in his footsteps. \n*Price includes farm-to-table\, gourmet meals cooked by an on-site chef\, and on-site camping with access to flush toilets and a shower.  Fruit and baked goods are provided in the morning. \n  \nFriday 5-8 pm\, Saturday 9-8 pm\, Sunday 9-5 pm. \n \n*Friday**\n5:00 - 6:15 Bowl Tea Ceremony\n6:30 - 7:30 Dinner at Elkstone Farm\n8:00 - 9:00 Evening Meditation\n9:00 Close for the night\n\n**Saturday**\n6:00 - 7:00 Meditation\n7:00 - 8:00 Rest / Shower\n8:00 - 9:00 Breakfast\n9:00 - 10:30 Sidehandle Tea Ceremony\n10:30 - 12:00 Discussion on a Life of Tea\n12:00 - 1:00 Lunch\n1:00 - 2:30 Rest period / Walking / Journaling\n2:30 - 4:00 Silent Tea Ceremony\n4:30 - 5:30 Meditation\n5:30 - 6:30 Rest Period\n6:30 - 7:30 Dinner\n8:00 - 9:00 Meditation\n9:00 Close for the night\n\n**Sunday**\n6:00 - 7:00 Meditation\n7:00 - 8:00 Rest / Shower\n8:00 - 9:00 Breakfast\n9:00 - 10:30 Boiled Tea Ceremony\n10:30 - 12:00 Discussion on a Life of Tea\n12:00 - 1:00 Lunch\n1:00 - 2:30 Rest Period / Walking / Journaling\n\n2:30 - 4:00 Silent Tea Ceremony\n4:30 - 5:30 Meditation\n5:30 - 6:30 Rest Period\n\n6:00 - 7:00 Closing Circle for Weekend\n  \nYour facilitators: \n \nBu Nan Brown is a Zen priest\, somatic guide\, and steward of the contemplative tea path. Rooted in nearly two decades of Buddhist study and practice\, his offerings weave together stillness\, presence\, and the subtle art of heart-centered service. \nTrained in the Rinzai Zen tradition and deeply influenced by the teachings of Ken Wilber\, Jun Po Roshi\, Alan Wallace\, and the yogic lineages of India\, Bu Nan brings a devotional care to each bowl of tea. His tea ceremonies are not performances—they are invitations into the sacred ordinary\, where the nervous system softens\, the heart opens\, and something ancient is remembered. \nIn addition to guiding tea practice\, Bu Nan is the founder of the Attachment Repair Collective\, where he offers coaching and community to those on the path of relational healing. His work bridges the somatic\, the spiritual\, and the relational—reminding us that beauty\, belonging\, and depth are always close at hand. \n\nMarco Chung-Shu Lam is a curious and compassionate human being who has a passion for health\, the environment and the ability of humans to create a better world. He has practiced Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for over 25 years and is lauded to have a unique style of practice that accelerates his clients breakthroughs in both physical and cognitive arenas. Practicing internal martial arts for over 30 years has deeply informed his relationship with tea. His zen teacher\, Jun Po Roshi\, bestowed the name Yakuso to him\, which means the healing source in Japanese. Marco’s style of tea pouring centers around family and community. His main teacher of tea was his grandmother\, An Chin Lin\, who believed that serving tea was a way to share your love with other people. Marco believes the same. Along with his wife\, Jamie\, he is the steward and farm manager of Elkstone Farm. \n \nSerena Jetelina is a Yoga Movement Therapist and Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist whose work centers around the healing power of presence\, ritual\, and embodied awareness. Rooted in the contemplative traditions of Sri Vidya Tantra\, yoga\, and meditation\, her sessions often unfold around the quiet simplicity of tea—used as both anchor and invitation into deeper listening. \nThrough the art of tea ceremony and personalized therapeutic practices\, Serena creates spacious\, grounded environments where individuals can reconnect with themselves and the subtle wisdom of the body. Her approach blends movement\, breath\, and stillness\, offering a gentle path toward healing\, self-trust\, and transformation. \nIn addition to her therapeutic offerings\, Serena serves as Head of Yoga International\, where she brings over two decades of business experience in wellness leadership\, education\, and design. \nWhether in ceremony or strategy\, Serena’s work is a devotion to the sacred in everyday life.

SUMMARY:Men's Retreat: The Integrated Man\, June 6-8\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Power\, Passion\, Purpose\nWhat would your life look like if you stopped making excuses? If you abandoned blame — of your parents\, of circumstance\, of women\, of yourself — and stood in full ownership of your life? \nThis weekend isn’t about fixing you because you’re not broken. It’s about finding the courage to tell the truth\, and claim the life waiting for you. \nAccountability \nThe hardest truth is also the most liberating: your life is yours. Every decision\, every action\, every regret\, every triumph — yours. When you stop pointing fingers and start owning your story\, the world begins to shift. Responsibility isn’t a burden; it’s your power. On the other side of radical ownership is the life you’ve been waiting to claim. \nSovereignty \nAccountability is free of shame\, untinged with guilt. True sovereignty is the ability to embrace your life — scars\, mistakes\, and triumphs alike — without neurotic self-blame or self-praise. It’s learning to hold a paradox: taking full responsibility and releasing the need to punish yourself. This allows a man to deepen his power\, tap into his passion\, and fuel his purpose. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength and Heart: The Ultimate Polarity\nMen are taught to choose: strength or heart. But why settle for half of yourself? This weekend invites you to step into the profound both/and — the place where courage meets compassion\, where resilience amplifies vulnerability. True masculine strength isn’t cold or distant; it’s fully alive\, beating with the rhythm of a passionate heart. \nSaid simply\, it takes balls and courage to admit your vulnerability rather than to posture or collapse around it. What does it feel like to be both vulnerable and grounded\, humble and confident\, strong and open? That is exactly what you will experience\, in your own body and mind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Gain\n\n\nA deeper understanding of who you are and what drives you. \n\n\nPractical tools to move past blame and step into authentic accountability. \n\n\nA framework for balancing strength with compassion. \n\n\nA clear vision of your passion and purpose. \n\n\nPractices for embodiment\, mindfulness\, and presence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will be led by experienced men’s work facilitators Marco Lam and Eddie Konold.  Eddie is a licensed psychotherapist. Marco is an acupuncturist\, permaculture expert\, and community leader. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n— GA\, Spring 2022 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Is Your Call to Action\nThe world is waiting for the man who knows himself. The man who walks with power\, fueled by passion and guided by purpose. \nThe only question is: are you ready to meet him? \nTake the first step: reserve your spot now. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday  \n6-7:15 - Council \n7:30-8:30 pm Dinner at Elkstone Farm \n8:30- 9:10 pm Fire circle: Turn up the heat \n9:10 Close for the night \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday \n9:00-9:40- Sit \n9:45-10:15- Physical/embodiment exercise \n10:15-1200 Content/circle/teaching \n12:00-1:00- Lunch \n1:00-3:30- Content/circle/teaching \n3:30-5- Extended break/wander/practice period \n5-6:30- Content/circle/teaching \n6:30-7:30- Dinner \n7:30-8:45- Closing circle for the day \n8:45-9 — Warrior’s rest/Meditation \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday \n9:00-9:40- Sit \n9:40-10:00 Physical/embodiment exercise \n10:00-11:30- Content/circle/teaching \n11:30-11:45- Break \n11:45-12:00- Physical/embodiment exercise \n12:00-1:00- Lunch \n1:00-3:30- Content/circle/teaching \n3:30-3:45 Break \n3:45 - 4:20 Circle/teaching \n4:20 - 4:30 Break \n4:30-5:00 - Bringing it home \n\n\nREFUND POLICY \nRefunds will be charged a $50 fee up to 30 days before the event. \nTHERE ARE NO REFUNDS WITHIN 30 DAYS OF START OF THE EVENT.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony in the Greenhouse with Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, May 28th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a tea ceremony in our beautiful four season greenhouse. Drink tea in a grove of citrus and fig trees\, flowers and herbs\, while the cold weather is brewing outside. We will be sharing traditional bowl tea in the Cha Dao style of tea ceremony. Marco will share a bit about tea practice and there will be time after to relax in the greenhouse. \nCha Dao\, “The Way of Tea” is a practice that comes from the depth of Chinese culture and from the Taoist practices of relating to nature as medicine. The ancient Taoists and sages use tea as both plant medicine and as a path to cultivate awareness and to deepen one's mediation practice. Tea is one of the most accessible plant teachers and as a gentle spirit\, it can guide you into a more powerful and centered relationship with nature. \nLed by Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, who is one of our farm managers and also runs an integrative medicine clinic in Boulder. He is a skilled practitioner of internal martial arts\, acupuncture and herbalism who has practiced in Colorado for over twenty years. He has a deep love of tea and will be sharing from his personal collection of both aged shou pu-erhs and an exquisite oolong in this session.

SUMMARY:Bee Guardianship Workshop: May 17-18th\, 2025 with Alex DeCesaro
DESCRIPTION:We are super excited to bring back one of our favorite Bee Guardians\, Alex DeCesaro\, for another round of mind blowing class about how to care for bees. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range.  This class is open to folks new to beekeeping\, just curious or skilled beekeepers looking for a holistic understanding of bee guardianship! \nSession 1:\nMay 17th: 10am - 3pm\nSession 1 covers more than just the bee basics\, which is a misnomer because there is nothing basic about bees! Alex paints a fascinating picture of how bee genetics inform survivor behavior traits\, how these traits make up the bees' behavioral immune system\, which directly relate to survivability. Alex  launches into the big picture of bees as a superorganism\, why we teach beekeeping the way we do\, and why we designed the type of hives we use. We compare and contrast different hive styles used by the majority of beekeepers\, but we also explore various management practices that natural Bee Guardians use to create a sustainable habitat for the bees. Once we learn the bee basics\, understand the individual types of bees in the colony\, and can identify and discern the various combs and their uses in the nest\, we will have the foundation to continue onto Session 2. \n  \nSession 2:\nMay 18th: 10am - 3pm\nIn Session 2 we go through step-by-step management practices during the seasons of the hive. We learn to "read" combs from different locations in the honey bee nest and assess their condition\, their state of health and many other factors. Alex demonstrates unique techniques for hive management\, presents a "time lapse" perspective of how the honey bee nest is initially created\, how it evolves over the first year and how it is sustained over the years through careful observation and application of specific management techniques at the right times. By the end of Session 2 you should be able to identify colony problems\, apply solutions and be able to assess what to do for your bees in just about every circumstance that you will encounter. Session 2 is also when we get to see how Alex approaches the hives and how she flows with the energy of the bees\, and how she moves through the hive\, weather permitting. \n  \nAbout the Instructors: \n \nAlex has been keeping bees for 6 years and is passionate about sharing this knowledge with others in order to help the local pollinator population. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range. She is interested in keeping bees on a spiritual level and aims to be a steward of the earth through this ancient practice. You can find out more about her work through her website https://www.alma-apiary.com.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Oyster Mushrooms at home with Micheal Butts: May 15th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Micheal will spend a day introducing you to growing Oyster Mushrooms on a small scale with simple processes you can do at home\, and you’ll go home with your first little “garden” of mushrooms.   In the morning we will start by introducing you to the wonderful world of fungi\, discuss growing mediums well suited for Oyster varieties and the conditions that help them to thrive to abundant fruiting. We will discuss where we can find all the commonly available resources. I will have step by step instructions for you on preparing the growing medium and how to create the favorable conditions for fruiting as the mycelium grows.  This class was really popular last year and it was wonderful hearing about the successes of the students growing mushrooms! \nAfter a wonderful farm-to-table lunch at the farm we will spend a couple hours having fun building our own mushroom grow bags with materials I will have ready to assemble.   Folks will go home with some of their own innoculated mushroom bags. \n\n \n\n\n\n\nMicheal Butts is an urban homesteader in downtown Loveland\, Colorado packing his quarter acre estate with a flock of yard birds\, several colonies of honey bees\, garden beds\, a wood fired coffee roastery\, beer and mead brewing equipment and a firewood shed. He is the production manager for Crown Mushrooms farm in nearby Berthoud.

SUMMARY:Book Club Dinner: Animal\, Vegetable\, Miracle: May 13th
DESCRIPTION:This is the second of our more conversational family-style dinners at the farm.    We are excited to present an evening that nourishes us with good food from the farm while engaging in a deeper community experience.  Our farm manager\, Marco Lam\, will be facilitating the discussion along with special guest\, Danielle Skov\, the owner and proprietor of our amazing local bookstore\, Off the Beaten Path.   We have both been inspired by Barbara Kingsolver's work and what better place to discuss a book on being a locavore than over a sumptuous farm-to-table dinner! \nWhen published in 2007\, ANIMAL\, VEGETABLE\, MIRACLE was embraced by readers worldwide and quickly earned its place as a credo for the locavore movement. The family's chronicle of struggles and triumphs as they rooted themselves to their Appalachian farm and adopted a locally-produced diet was met with critical acclaim\, spent years on bestseller lists and won the James Beard Award. \n“Ten years ago\, we wrote this book about our decision to get serious with eating local\, more or less forsaking all others\,” Barbara writes. “It was such a novel idea that we had to make up our own language for it\, although the word ‘locavore’ germinated so naturally from the lexicon that it was invented simultaneously by many people at around the same time. Now it’s in the dictionary and on menus all over the place. What we’d thought of as our eccentric family notion broke out into something of a scene. I don’t mean that we created a scene—not at all—but that we happened to publish our family’s story at a moment when lots of families were ready to examine and take more control of their own food stories.” \nChef Russell will take the best of the produce and fruit off the farm and craft a sumptuous family-style meal for us as we both talk about and eat from our local food chain! Buy your book at Off the Beaten Path and read it beforehand so that we can have a strong book group!
