SUMMARY:Bee Guardianship Workshop: June 6-7th\, 2026 with Alex DeCesaro
DESCRIPTION:We are super excited to bring back one of our favorite Bee Guardians\, Alex DeCesaro\, for another round of mind blowing class about how to care for bees. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range.  This class is open to folks new to beekeeping\, just curious or skilled beekeepers looking for a holistic understanding of bee guardianship! \nSession 1:\nJune 6th: 10am - 3pm\nSession 1 covers more than just the bee basics\, which is a misnomer because there is nothing basic about bees! Alex paints a fascinating picture of how bee genetics inform survivor behavior traits\, how these traits make up the bees' behavioral immune system\, which directly relate to survivability. Alex  launches into the big picture of bees as a superorganism\, why we teach beekeeping the way we do\, and why we designed the type of hives we use. We compare and contrast different hive styles used by the majority of beekeepers\, but we also explore various management practices that natural Bee Guardians use to create a sustainable habitat for the bees. Once we learn the bee basics\, understand the individual types of bees in the colony\, and can identify and discern the various combs and their uses in the nest\, we will have the foundation to continue onto Session 2. \n  \nSession 2:\nJune 7th: 10am - 3pm\nIn Session 2 we go through step-by-step management practices during the seasons of the hive. We learn to "read" combs from different locations in the honey bee nest and assess their condition\, their state of health and many other factors. Alex demonstrates unique techniques for hive management\, presents a "time lapse" perspective of how the honey bee nest is initially created\, how it evolves over the first year and how it is sustained over the years through careful observation and application of specific management techniques at the right times. By the end of Session 2 you should be able to identify colony problems\, apply solutions and be able to assess what to do for your bees in just about every circumstance that you will encounter. Session 2 is also when we get to see how Alex approaches the hives and how she flows with the energy of the bees\, and how she moves through the hive\, weather permitting. \n  \nAbout the Instructors: \n \nAlex has been keeping bees for 6 years and is passionate about sharing this knowledge with others in order to help the local pollinator population. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range. She is interested in keeping bees on a spiritual level and aims to be a steward of the earth through this ancient practice. You can find out more about her work through her website https://www.alma-apiary.com.

SUMMARY:Roots & Remedies — The Art of Tincture Making with Lexy Vogel: June 8\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Plant Medicine of the Yampa Valley — A 3-Part Herb Series \nThe land around us is generous. From the creek banks to the trailheads to the weeds pushing up through your garden\, this valley is full of plants that have supported human health for centuries — as food\, as medicine\, and as everyday self-care. \nIn this three-part series\, we'll learn to identify\, harvest\, and work with the plants closest to home. Each class is hands-on and practical\, and you'll leave every gathering with something handmade to add to your home apothecary. \nNo experience necessary. Just curiosity and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty. \n\n\nClass 1: Roots & Remedies — The Art of Tincture Making \nThe Yampa Valley is full of medicine\, and most of us walk right past it every day. In this first class\, we'll slow down and take a closer look at the wild plants growing in our own backyard — what they are\, what they do\, and how people have relied on them for generations to care for themselves and their families. \nWe'll cover the edible and medicinal plants most common to our region\, talk through the basics of herbal care as everyday medicine\, and dig into what it means to forage responsibly. \nThen we'll make a tincture together using wild-harvested ingredients. Tinctures are one of the most practical and shelf-stable ways to keep plant medicine on hand\, and the one you make in class will be ready to use and waiting in your apothecary when you need it. \nYou'll leave with a wild tincture\, a stronger eye for the plants around you\, and a solid foundation for the classes ahead. \n\nPlant Medicine of the Yampa Valley — A 3-Part Herb Series \nThe land around us is generous. SUMMARY:Medicinal Weeds\, Herbal First Aid\, and Salve Making with Lexy Vogel: June 22\, 2026
\n\n\nClass 2: Medicinal Weeds\, Herbal First Aid\, and Salve Making to add to your home apothecary  \nIn this class\, we'll go deeper into the wild weeds of the Yampa Valley\, with a focus on the ones that show up most reliably and do the most good. We'll talk about how these everyday plants can become a real part of your nutrition and self-care routine — supporting skin health\, reducing inflammation\, and adding genuine nourishment to your daily life in ways that are simple and accessible. \nWe'll also begin to build out your herbal first aid knowledge\, covering a handful of go-to plants worth having in your toolkit for cuts\, scrapes\, sore muscles\, and irritated skin. Then we'll make a wild herbal salve together — learning the process from infused oil to finished jar. Once you understand the method\, you can make salves for a dozen different uses depending on what your family needs. \nYou'll leave with a jar of wild salve\, practical first aid plant knowledge\, and the skills to keep making your own.

Just curiosity and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty. \n\n\nClass 3: Roots of Calm — Plants for Digestion & Emotional Wellbeing \nGood health starts in the gut\, and the plants around us can be allies with our digestion and how we handle stress. In this final class\, we'll look at the very real connection between what we eat\, how we feel\, and how plants can support both. \nWe'll get to know the weeds and wild plants that work quietly to support a healthy digestive system\, ease tension\, and help the body adapt to stress over time. Many of these plants are easy to grow or are already growing nearby and can be incorporated into your meals\, your daily routine\, and your self-care in ways that are simple and sustainable. \nYou'll leave with your own hand-blended tea\, a better understanding of plant-based digestive and emotional support\, and a toolkit you can keep building on.

SUMMARY:The Soil Food Web: Direct participation in Soil Science: July 17th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Take a deep dive into the microbial world of the Soil Food Web with Lanny Ellis.  Learn about the beneficial bacteria\, fungi\, protozoa\, nematodes and other soil organisms that keep your plants healthy and thriving. Understand who they are\, what they do\, why they are there\, and how we can foster MORE beneficial organisms in our soil. Healthy ecosystems and people start with healthy soil\, and it all starts from the ground up!\n\nThis lesson entails an educational primer to introduce the basics of soil biology and the Soil Food Web\, as well as a live soil microscopy demonstration using living soil to showcase the organisms present in healthy vibrant soil. Bring in your own compost and soil samples to get an immediate qualitative assessment using direct observation microscopy!\n\n\nWe'll finish our class with a wonderful farm-to-table lunch provided by Chef Russell!\n\n\n\n\nLanny Ellis is a gardener and a soil scientist that is never done learning.  Lanny moved to Colorado in 2013 after graduating from University of Texas in Arlington with a bachelors in Anthropology. He then began his journey into Permaculture with the Permaculture Design Course at CRMPI in Basalt\, CO and the Colorado Master Gardener Program in 2016. He is also a certified Colorado Native Plant Master.\n\nLanny started practicing garden management at the Salvation Army in Avon\, Colorado where he also formed a small non-profit organization called New Roots CO with like-minded volunteers. New Roots CO was approached by Colorado Mountain College in 2020 to take over management of their community garden located on campus. Since then\, Lanny has taken the reins as community garden manager\, and has led several educational workshops\, volunteer work days\, and lectures within the community garden.\n\nIn 2021\, Lanny completed the Soil Food Web School's certified laboratory technician program so that he could better analyze soil samples and dive into the world of microbiology. Today he uses these skills to conduct live microscopy soil tests for clients across Colorado\, and to formulate action plans to convert dirt back into soil.
