SUMMARY:Arnica wildcrafting and salve making with Marco Lam\, June 9th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of wildcrafting  as we ethically harvest vibrant mountain arnica and transform it into a potent\, small-batch healing salve. Guided by Marco Lam—herbalist\, acupuncturist\, and regenerative land steward—you’ll learn how to identify arnica in its natural habitat\, understand its traditional and modern uses\, and harvest with deep respect for ecological balance. This hands-on class weaves together plant wisdom\, practical skill\, and embodied connection to place. \nAfter gathering\, we’ll return to the farm to prepare a rich\, golden arnica salve you’ll take home—crafted by your own hands. Marco will share insights from Western herbalism and Chinese medicine on topical applications for bruises\, strains\, and muscle soreness\, along with guidance on formulation\, infusion methods\, and safe use. Whether you’re new to herbal medicine or deepening your practice\, this class offers grounded knowledge\, community connection\, and a renewed relationship with the healing plants growing at your feet. \nWe'll gather for a farm-to-table lunch on the back porch in the aspens after class to enjoy each others company and to answer any question.

SUMMARY:Bee Guardianship Workshop: June 6-7th\, 2026 with Alex DeCesaro
DESCRIPTION:We are super excited to bring back one of our favorite Bee Guardians\, Alex DeCesaro\, for another round of mind blowing class about how to care for bees. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range.  This class is open to folks new to beekeeping\, just curious or skilled beekeepers looking for a holistic understanding of bee guardianship! \nSession 1:\nJune 6th: 10am - 3pm\nSession 1 covers more than just the bee basics\, which is a misnomer because there is nothing basic about bees! Alex paints a fascinating picture of how bee genetics inform survivor behavior traits\, how these traits make up the bees' behavioral immune system\, which directly relate to survivability. Alex  launches into the big picture of bees as a superorganism\, why we teach beekeeping the way we do\, and why we designed the type of hives we use. We compare and contrast different hive styles used by the majority of beekeepers\, but we also explore various management practices that natural Bee Guardians use to create a sustainable habitat for the bees. Once we learn the bee basics\, understand the individual types of bees in the colony\, and can identify and discern the various combs and their uses in the nest\, we will have the foundation to continue onto Session 2. \n  \nSession 2:\nJune 7th: 10am - 3pm\nIn Session 2 we go through step-by-step management practices during the seasons of the hive. We learn to "read" combs from different locations in the honey bee nest and assess their condition\, their state of health and many other factors. Alex demonstrates unique techniques for hive management\, presents a "time lapse" perspective of how the honey bee nest is initially created\, how it evolves over the first year and how it is sustained over the years through careful observation and application of specific management techniques at the right times. By the end of Session 2 you should be able to identify colony problems\, apply solutions and be able to assess what to do for your bees in just about every circumstance that you will encounter. Session 2 is also when we get to see how Alex approaches the hives and how she flows with the energy of the bees\, and how she moves through the hive\, weather permitting. \n  \nAbout the Instructors: \n \nAlex has been keeping bees for 6 years and is passionate about sharing this knowledge with others in order to help the local pollinator population. Alex teaches beekeeping with a bee-centric approach to promote a beekeeping practice that is more rooted in nature. She has studied under Backyard Hive's Corwin Bell and works with Michael Thiele to bring back natural nesting sites to areas on the Front Range. She is interested in keeping bees on a spiritual level and aims to be a steward of the earth through this ancient practice. You can find out more about her work through her website https://www.alma-apiary.com.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony with Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, May 15th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a tea ceremony!  We will be sharing traditional bowl tea in the Cha Dao style of tea ceremony. Marco will share a bit about tea practice and there will be time to drink plenty of tea. \nCha Dao\, “The Way of Tea” is a practice that comes from the depth of Chinese culture and from the Taoist practices of relating to nature as medicine. The ancient Taoists and sages use tea as both plant medicine and as a path to cultivate awareness and to deepen one's mediation practice. Tea is one of the most accessible plant teachers and as a gentle spirit\, it can guide you into a more powerful and centered relationship with nature. \nLed by Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, who is one of our farm managers and also runs an integrative medicine clinic in Boulder. He is a skilled practitioner of internal martial arts\, acupuncture and herbalism who has practiced in Colorado for over twenty years. He has a deep love of tea and will be sharing from his personal collection of teas in this session.

SUMMARY:Book Club Dinner: Yampa Yearnings : May 14th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:For those who live along the bends of the Yampa River\, under the long skies of the valley\, and among the seasons that shape this place—you’re invited to gather for a shared reading of Yampa Yearnings by award-winning author Eugene Buchanan.   We may all share some concern for our low snowpack melting into a low water year for our beloved river.   This is an opportunity to increase awareness for our backyard river. \nThis book club will bring together neighbors from across the Yampa Valley to read and discuss the novel Yampa Yearnings\, a story rooted in the landscapes\, longings\, and layered histories of our region. Together we’ll explore the characters\, the valley itself\, and the deeper questions the story raises about place\, belonging\, and the lives we build here. \nWhether you’ve lived here for generations or just arrived under the spell of these mountains\, you’re warmly welcome. \nCome for the book.  Stay for the conversation! \nBring a copy of Yampa Yearnings\, a curious mind\, and perhaps a friend who loves the valley as much as you do. \nChef Russell will cook a family-style farm-to-table dinner to accompany our dinner discussion. Our farm manager\, Marco Lam\, is partnering once again with Danielle Skov\, of Off the Beaten Path bookstore\, to host a lively discussion.  Please order your book in advance and read it.   If you don't finish it\, you can can still join us for dinner without being embarrassed! \nEXCITING UPDATEL \nEugene Buchanan\, the author\,  is going to join us for dinner and discussion! \nA former reporter for the Denver Business Journal and 14-year publisher and editor-in-chief of Paddler magazine\, Eugene Buchanan has written about the outdoors for more than 25 years. He’s covered sports at the highest levels of competition\, including the X Games for ESPN.com and the Beijing Olympics while working for NBC. \nAs a member of New York’s prestigious Explorer’s Club\, Eugene’s articles have appeared in such publications as the New York Times\, National Geographic Adventure\, Men's Journal\, Sports Afield\, Outside\, Forbes Life\, Skiing\, Bike and more. He’s a talented PR specialist\, copywriter\, and speaker\, and is the author of five books: Brothers on the Bashkaus (2007); Outdoor Parents\, Outdoor Kids (2010); Ultimate Canoe & Kayak Adventures (2013); Comrades on the Colca (2016)\, and Tales from a Mountain Town (2017). \nEugene is the editor for Swift Communications’ magazine division in Steamboat Springs\, Colorado. SUMMARY:Fruit Tree Grafting class with Marco Lam\, May 12th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Learn the timeless art of fruit tree grafting in this hands-on workshop with Marco Lam. In this immersive class\, you’ll explore the why and how of grafting—rootstock selection\, scion wood preparation\, cambium alignment\, and aftercare—while gaining a deeper understanding of how resilient\, cold-adapted orchards are cultivated. Marco brings a regenerative land stewardship lens to the craft\, weaving practical technique with orchard ecology\, varietal preservation\, and the long-term vision of growing food sovereignty in mountain climates. \nEach participant will graft their own heritage\, cold-hardy fruit tree and take it home ready to plant and thrive. You’ll leave with not only a living tree\, but the confidence and skill to continue grafting in seasons to come. Whether you’re starting a backyard orchard or expanding an established homestead\, this class offers the rare opportunity to propagate regional genetics\, preserve heirloom varieties\, and root yourself more deeply in the living cycle of fruit\, land\, and lineage. \nIf you have scion cuttings of a tree you wish to propagate or preserve\, bring them to class. \nAfter the class\, we will have a farm-to-table lunch on back porch and answer any questions while we enjoy the best of the spring harvest!

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony with Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, April 2nd\, 2026

SUMMARY:Tea and Embodiment: March 18th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique morning weaving together the ancient art of Chinese tea ceremony with the nurturing practice of Breema bodywork. Through the mindful preparation and sharing of tea\, we’ll taste stillness\, harmony\, and connection to nature. Breema’s gentle\, supportive movements will  invite the body to deeply relax\, releasing tension and opening space for balance and vitality. \nTogether\, these practices offer a doorway into embodied presence—where we can drink in life more fully\, attune to the wisdom of our bodies\, and nourish ourselves in community. \nNo prior experience with tea or Breema is needed. Just bring your curiosity\, a willingness to receive\, and an open heart.   Our two farm managers will be co-teaching.    Please bring a blanket and a cushion to sit on. \nThe Breema bodywork will be led by Jamie Furstoss.  Jamie became a Breema instructor in 2011\, and continues to study and practice this life nourishing modality. \nThe tea ceremony will be led by Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, who is one of our farm managers and also runs an integrative medicine clinic in Boulder. He is a skilled practitioner of internal martial arts\, acupuncture and herbalism who has practiced in Colorado for over twenty years. He has a deep love of tea and will be sharing from his personal collection of both aged shou pu-erhs and an exquisite red tea in this session.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony with Marco Chung-Shu Lam\, October 28th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a tea ceremony!  Depending on the weather we will either have tea in the aspen grove or in the greenhouse.

SUMMARY:Book Club Dinner: Nexus: Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI : October 16th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:We are going to depart  from our last three food-oriented books and delve into  one of the most important topics today.  We will discuss how  to adapt to the monumental amount of information coming toward us and look into the future impacts of artificial intelligence.   I think this will be a rich conversation! \nJoin Us for This Month’s Book Club: Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari \nFor over 100\,000 years\, humans have gained immense power through discovery\, invention\, and conquest. Yet here we are—facing ecological collapse\, drowning in misinformation\, and hurtling into an AI-driven future that could reshape (or end) life as we know it. \nIn Nexus\, Yuval Noah Harari takes us on an epic journey through human history—from the Stone Age to the age of artificial intelligence—asking one pressing question: why\, for all our brilliance\, are we so self-destructive? \nTogether\, we’ll explore: \n\n\nHow the flow of information has shaped civilizations\, myths\, and political systems. \n\n\nThe tension between truth and propaganda\, wisdom and power. \n\n\nThe urgent decisions humanity faces as non-human intelligence rises.
